Darren Long was born in Dallas, Texas and moved to Austin when he was just 9 years old. As a boy, he was an active member of the Boy Scouts. He attended Austin Community College and Southwest Texas State University. Darren served and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corp. He joined the Travis County Sheriff’s Office in 1987. In 2006, he was promoted to Major and was assigned to the Administration & Support Bureau. In 2008, Major Long was appointed as the Jail Administrator responsible for the 38th largest jail system in the nation. In February 2014, he was appointed as Major over the Law Enforcement Bureau. He honorably retired as Major over Law Enforcement after 28 years of faithful service in 2015. Darren is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Texas Leadership Command College. He served as a Board Member on the American Jail Association, Travis County Community Justice Council, Mayor’s Mental Health Task Force, and the Criminal Justice Advisory Board. Darren has been very involved in the Community – volunteering for charity organizations such as the Austin Children’s Shelter, Texas Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, and was a Seedling Mentor. He also coached his two daughters soccer teams for 10 years. Darren has served his community and country for most of his life. Darren (Major Blaze) currently serves as Head of Campus Operations at Blaze Kids Academy.
